Whether you are looking to prep your home for sale or just make it more enjoyable, here are the top 5 ways to make a room feel bigger:

1. Clear out the Clutter

Too much stuff can make any room, no matter how large feel cramped. Take out all furniture, décor, keepsakes, knick knacs, etc that overwhelm the space. Keep items neat and tidy and placed off the floor on tables or shelves. When decorating a small room, create a focal point —Arrange the furniture so that focus is drawn to that area, and keep the décor in the rest of the room minimal.

2. Create a Wall and Furniture Color Theme

Contrasting colors tend to break up a space, making it appear even smaller than it is. Pieces of furniture that are similar to wall color are less jarring and help create an illusion of a bigger room.

3. Let the Light In

A well-lit room, either by natural light or artificial lighting will make a room appear larger. Nix the heavy draperies keep window coverings streamlined to let the most light in. If you do not have a lot of natural light, you can add some creative effects using different light fixtures.

4. Add Reflective Surfaces

Reflective surfaces bounce more light and in turn create the illusion of more space. Use a large framed mirror on a wall, or stand an oversized framed mirror against a wall. The room and light will be reflected, resulting in a more open feeling. Top a coffee table or side table with a piece of beveled plate mirror, or purchase a mirrored chest of drawers for a similar effect.

5. Keep it Clear and Go High.

Bring bookcases, cabinets and tile all the way to the ceiling to lead the eye up and fake the appearance of a taller space. Transparent materials, such as glass and Lucite, take up less visual space in a room and look great as a coffee table or chair.
